Messy Church - Being a Messy Church

Girl flying her kiteOn Sunday 23rd June, Messy Church Formby spent the afternoon exploring what it means to be part of Messy Church. The activities were all based around this theme and included doing, growing, receiving, sharing, telling and waiting. The worship pulled all these elements together and incorporated songs and prayer.

The Activities

Girl jumping in welliesDoing - Walking in Jesus' footsteps
As Christians we are asked to try to be like Jesus and this may not be easy. We may need lots of practice before we are any good at it.

To illustrate how challenging it can be to follow in Jesus' footsteps we asked the children and their adults to have a go at an assault course in extra large wellies!

Boy sowing seed Growing - Planting seeds
God wants us to grow by praying/talking to Him and by reading our Bibles to learn more about Him. To illustrate growing in faith we planted a seed in some compost. As we watch the seed grow into a plant we can think about how we can grow in faith and knowledge of God Girl with plant

making a kiteReceiving - making a kite
God describes the Holy Spirit like a rushing wind that came down on the first disciples. We cannot control the wind, but we can feel it when it comes. We can pray for God’s Spirit to come and we can feel His work inside our lives.

We made paper kites and decorated them, then took them outside for a fly - it was perfect kite flying weather!

When we share, we become closer to other people – both in giving and receiving. We are called to be generous with our things, with our time and with our skills.

We decorated a very large drawing of a jar of sweets with lots of colourful pieces of paper. Each child was given a pack of sweets to share wuth as many people as possible.

Girls making handprint doves Handprint doves
God describes the Holy Spirit like a dove and told the disciples to wait for Him to come. Sometimes we have to wait for things, like waiting for the handprint to dry a bit before we can add the rest.

Boy thinking of forgiveness wordsForgiveness - When we pray the Lord’s prayer, we say “forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us”. We will always argue sometimes, but Jesus wants us to forgive each other.

Using the first letters of Argue and Forgive we tried to think of words that fit the theme such as Friendly – Open – Right – Gracious – Including – Valued – Enlivening or Angry – Restricting – Grumpy – Unhappy - Excluding.

Chiuldren with ribbons. Telling – Sharing stories about Jesus and Messy Church
Jesus wants us to tell other people the good news about Him. We thought about what we could say and who we would want to tell?

After an hour of activities, we began our time of celebration and worship.Caroline led the worship and the action songs. She talked about all the different parts of today's Messy church and why they are important

After the worship, we tucked in to a picnic tea followed by an assortment of delicious cakes! During the supper we were able to enjoy a special time of fellowship which included birthday celebrations and lots of chat.
